What is an au pair?

"Au pair" means "on par" or equal. An Au Pair is a cultural exchange visitor who travels to the United States on a J-1 Visitor Exchange visa for 12 months to live with an American family and care for their children. In return for full board, lodging and pocket money, au pairs agree to help with the children and perform light household duties. They provide a maximum of 45 hours per week (maximum of 10 hours per day) of childcare.

Legal J-1 Visa

The United States government Department of State has designated certain organizations to participate in the Au Pair Cultural Exchange Program. The regulations are set forth by the government and must be enforced by each sponsoring organization and the rules and regulations are the same for all Au Pair Programs in the United States.

Agent Au Pair is one of the few designated organisations that enables you to participate in our Au Pair program. You live and work with your host family for 12 months on a legal J-1 visa. As a part of the program you have the ability to utilize a 30-day grace period granted by the INS for the purpose of personal travel within the United States after you have finished the 12-month program.
