How long does it take to place me?
Once we receive your application and references, an interviewer in your country will interview with you. You will be able to be placed shortly thereafter. It generally takes 1-3 months.

Can I apply any time of the year?
Yes - You can. We recommend that you apply as soon as you
have made the desicion to participate.

Can I choose an area?
You can request to be placed in a certain region, but it's not guaranteed. Keep in mind, requesting a certain area will limit the number of host families who call you.

Can I leave the program if I am homesick?
You should think carefully before you apply that you will be away from home for 12 months. If you leave the program early - for any reason - you will lose your deposit.

How long can an au pair stay with a family, and can the arrangement be extended?
The Au Pair Program in America is for one year. If you and the host family would like to to continue your arrangement, you can extend your J-1 visa for up to another year.

What if a problem arises?
You should discuss the problem with the host family. If this does not provide a satisfactory result, discuss the problem with the local community counselor and provide him/her with written notification of the problem. If you feel it is still unresolved, call the regional manager or the program director.

What do I do if there is an emergency?
Call the 24 hour emergency number provided to you in your Pre-Arrival Information packet.

What if I want to change my host family?
With acceptable reasons, You have the right to find another family. No one will force you to stay somewhere that you do not like, but we cannot change your host family when there is not a legitimate and real reason. If there is a legitimate reason for changing your family, we will be glad to help you.

Acceptable reasons for changing your host family are as follows:
- They are not paying your salary every week
- They are not providing you adequate food/nutrition
- You do not have your own private bedroom
- They do not allow you to attend your studies
- They do not treat you as a friend or welcome member in their household
- The host family has asked you to leave

The above are examples of reasons why you should definately ask us to change your host family.
